Yo,
We’re deep into book writing. Here’s an update on the last couple of weeks:
What’s going well
I hit my outline goal. This felt great. I completed the outline on December 31, a few hours before the deadline.
I’ve hit my daily writing goal every day since. 15 days in a row. This is huge.
I’ve written 27,000 words of book. That’s the majority of the first draft!
The draft will be completed ahead of schedule. There aren’t that many chapters left. I believe I’ll hit my first draft goal before the end of January.
What sucks
Writing. Writing SUCKS.
Or more precisely: a loud inner part of me hates creating something that isn’t good yet. Something that doesn’t match my taste of how the finished product could be.
Rationally, I get it. A ‘bad’ first draft is a necessary, useful step toward an awesome later one.
But my nervous system hasn’t caught up. It feels unsafe in that space of creating something that doesn’t match my taste. It can’t see how we can possibly get from here to a finished product. ‘I should be better at this,’ it screams. ‘I’m no good’.
For days I was spending more time psyching myself up to do the work, than doing the work, in an attempt to avoid that feeling.
And yet, each day, I show up, I get one more rep, I show myself it’s possible, it’s safe, it gets easier.
The more I write, the more I see how much work there will still be after this draft. At the same time I’m starting to see small glimmers of how it does start to evolve into something better. I can’t see the path, but I have faith in it.
The outline
Here’s the outline, and a video of how it’s evolved. It’s all iteration. Play.
What stands out to you? If you could only open one chapter, which one would it be?
Have a great weekend,
P.S. A few of you have asked to preorder the book. I’m touched that you trust and want to support me in that way. Here’s the link to do that if you feel called to. No pressure, you’ll get plenty of the content in later emails either way.
