“Shai, what do you actually do for work?”

Shai Schechter • 2022

The short answer

I run software companies.

The joyful answer

I professionally play on the computer!

I get to make apps for people to use, which is exactly what I loved doing for fun when I was 4 years old.

And I get to chat to & learn from & teach the most wonderful people.

And travel the world.

I love what I do ☺️

The detailed answer

You know when you’re on a website and there’s a form at the bottom of an article to join the author’s email list, or there’s a quiz to help you figure out which product is best for you? I created the tool that powers those.

And you know once you’re on an email list, instead of unsubscribing altogether there’s sometimes an option to choose which kinds of emails you do and don’t want from that author/company? I created the tool that powers those, too.

And then I have a few other income streams, like some resources and projects helping junior developers, and some affiliate marketing income, some work with business schools helping their students and graduates, some investments in other software companies I believe in, the occasional software consulting project…

The future answer

While I absolutely love a lot of what I do, I can feel my passions starting to shift.

Where today a lot of what I’m creating helps marketers grow their businesses, I’m starting to find a lack of deep meaning there, and much more fulfilment in helping fellow creators with the mental and emotional and mindset side of running their business (and life!)—the side that realises that it’s ultimately more about people and feelings than things.

It’s a space where I’ve struggled with in the past, and learnt so much about over the last couple of years. It’s definitely been my #1 passion project. I find so much joy and purpose in helping other people with it, too. Every couple of weeks someone else tells me I’d make a good therapist!

While I don’t think a career change to therapist is the way forward, I’m gradually getting closer to figuring it out what that next phase looks like where I can help people with more than just marketing growth. Fast-forward a couple of years and I suspect what I’ll be creating and selling will be much closer to that space.
