Three circles model

A really useful model for understanding how we’re feeling at any given time.

We operate in one of three basic states at any given time: soothe, drive, or threat. Think of these as different modes our brain and body switch to, depending on what we’re facing.

The “soothe” state happens when we are relaxed and safe. It’s like when we’re curled up with a good book or chatting with a friend. Our body is calm, and our mind is at peace.

Next is the “drive” state. This is our action mode. When we’re working towards a goal, like finishing a project or playing a sport, our body gears up for the task. We’re focused and motivated, ready to achieve.

Finally, there’s the “threat” state. It’s our body’s alarm system. Imagine suddenly spotting a snake or fearing you left the stove on. Your heart races, and you’re on high alert. It’s our body’s way of preparing us to face danger.

While each state has its purpose, balance is key. Being stuck too long in one, especially the threat state, isn’t good for our well-being.

If you’re always feeling discontent and anxious, for example, it’s because you’re spending all your time in the threat state (as a response to the perceived threat from negative thoughts, rather than from things in the environment around us).

Recognising and understanding these states can help us navigate life more effectively, because there are simple ways to move ourselves from one state to another.
