There are few things that are more ‘easier said than done’ than ‘get out of your comfort zone’.
But after years of struggle, I might’ve stumbled into an incredible secret to making it happen?
See, the trouble is, ‘get out of your comfort zone’ is a negative action request. It only tells you what not to do.
It doesn’t really tell you where to go instead.
Where else is there? Well, the only place I was aware of that’s outside of the comfort zone is the discomfort zone… or the panic zone.
Shit gets pretty crazy out there. We don’t like it there.
No wonder getting out of your comfort zone is hard.
But when you break it down deeper, you can actually separate that discomfort zone into two different places (yellow and red):
Red is the panic zone that feels too horrible to go into.
But what about the yellow zone?
This is your stretch zone. Just outside the comfort zone, where things are just slightly outside what’s comfortable. 10% more than you can comfortably handle.
It’s still pretty tolerable to hang out there, it turns out, once you realise that you can stay there without slipping all the way to the edge of the panic zone.
And if you spend time there, you’ll get serious shit done, while constantly growing. Feels so much more achievable and sustainable.
