Figuring out what to put on your micro-goal checklist

Yesterday I wrote about making a daily micro-goal checklist. A few people asked how I figured out what to put on mine, because they’ve wanted to make one too but struggle to figure out what to put on it.

Some things I asked myself to help figure out my list:

  • What do I want to have done or what do I wish had already been done by me last week—in contrast to the more immediately gratifying ‘what do I want to do’
  • What have I been putting off because it feels uncomfortable?
  • What things give me deeply joyous and fulfilled feelings on the occasions when I do do them?
  • Thinking about the image I have of who I truly am or want to be: what does the person in that mental movie do in their day?
  • What tasks do I admire other people doing consistently—or even feel jealous feelings about the fact that they’re doing them and I’m not?
  • Where would I like to get to big-picture, and what is my best guess right now for a step that goes a tiny bit closer to that?

And once I’d asked myself, trying to listen to my deepest authentic answers, before the fear rushes in to obscure them.

You could even start with things you already do / that are easy. It wouldn’t be long before your internal compass itches that those aren’t totally fulfilling and nudging you to what a better replacement would be.

And that’s the thing… you’ll swap things in and out of the list over time. Just be honest with yourself that you’re making adjustments because you believe the different direction is better for you, not because you’re wanting to avoid the discomfort of the existing micro-goal.
